Aditi Lahiri FBA obtained her first PhD from the University of Calcutta, India and her second from Brown University USA. She began her academic career at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) followed by the University of California at Santa Cruz (UCSC), after which she joined the Max Planck Institute of Psycholinguistics, Nijmegen as a Senior Researcher. She took the Chair of General Linguistics at the University of Konstanz in 1992 and joined the University of Oxford as Professor of Linguistics, Faculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics and fellow of Somerville College in 2007. She is the Director of the Language and Brain Laboratory in the Faculty and at present is also the President of the Philological Society and Vice President (Humanities) of the British Academy. She was awarded the Leibniz Prizein Germany, the Professor Sukumar Sen Memorial Gold Medal from the Asiatic Society, Calcutta, and was elected an Honorary Fellow of the Linguistics Society of America.
