Baines Collection: Made by Decree (2) of 27 June 2002

Bate Collection

1. The University has accepted with deep gratitude the gift of Mr Philip Bate of his collection of musical wind instruments.

2. Subject to the consent of the Board of the Faculty of Music and of the General Board, there may be added to the collection such other musical instruments as have been accepted by the University otherwise than on the basis of their retention as a separate collection.

3. A post of lecturer/curator shall be maintained (under the arrangements applicable to university lecturers), the holder of which shall, under the direction of the Board of the Faculty of Music, have charge of the collection and demonstrate it.

4. The Curators of the University Chest are authorised to accept sums contributed towards the cost of maintaining the said post of lecturer/curator, or of maintaining or adding to the collection.

Baines Collection

The collection of musical instruments bequeathed by Anthony Baines shall form part of the Bate Collection under the charge of its Curator in the premises allocated to the Faculty of Music.

Ellis Memorial Library

The contributions by friends of the late Francis Bevis Ellis, of Christ Church, and any further sums which may be so contributed, shall be applied, both as to capital and income, under the direction of the Heather Professor of Music, in providing accommodation for and maintaining a Library of Music bequeathed by the said Francis Bevis Ellis to the Heather Professor of Music and to be known as the Ellis Memorial Library.

Howes Bequest

The University accepts with gratitude the bequest of the late Frank Stewart Howes of his library of books, music pamphlets, and gramophone records relating to folk music, for the use of the Faculty of Music in encouraging the study of folk music and ethnomusicology.

Morley-Pegge Collection

The University accepts with gratitude from Mr William Morley-Pegge, in memory of his father, the late Reginald Morley-Pegge, the collection of wind instruments, books, and volumes of music from the estate of his father, the collection to be accommodated with the Bate Collection of Musical Instruments under the charge of its Curator in the premises allocated to the Faculty of Music.

Music Library

1. The books and music given to the University by Sir Hugh Percy Allen, MA, D.Mus., Fellow of New College, Heather Professor of Music, shall be kept together as a single working library for students of music within the University, and the present custom of borrowing shall be fully maintained.

2. The library shall be under the management of the Board of the Faculty of Music in consultation with the Heather Professor.

3. The University shall provide and maintain free of charge suitable accommodation for the library either in its present quarters or elsewhere.

4. An annual grant shall be made to the library for the provision for payment of a Librarian, for the purchase of music and books on music, and for the purpose of binding, the amount of such grant to be determined from time to time by the General Board.

Retford Collection

The University accepts with gratitude the collection of violin bows and bowmakers’ tools from the estate of the late William Charles Retford, Esquire (donated by his legatees), the collection to be accommodated in the premises allocated to the Faculty of Music, and to be in the charge of the Curator of the Bate Collection of Musical Instruments under the supervision of the Heather Professor of Music, who shall carry out the wish of the said William Charles Retford that the bows shall remain intact and on view for serious students of the craft as much and as regularly as practicable, to preserve and illustrate a basic knowledge of the bowmaker’s craft.
