Ashmolean Bomford Bequest Trust

The University expresses its gratitude to Mr H.J.P. Bomford for his generosity in establishing the Ashmolean Bomford Bequest Trust for the benefit of the Department of Antiquities of the Ashmolean Museum; and the Curators of the University Chest are authorized to accept payments made from time to time by the trustees to be used under the terms of the trust for or towards the purchase of antiquities and other objects of artistic merit for the museum.

Bouch Bequest

The sum of £4,741.46 bequeathed by the late Major Thomas Bouch, Magdalen College, shall be used to provide an income for the purchase of pictures, drawings, and other works of art for the Department of Western Art, Ashmolean Museum.

Dell Cabrejos Drawings Fund

1. The University accepts with gratitude an endowment from Mr David Dell, and any further sums contributed for the same purpose, to establish a fund, to be known as the Dell Cabrejos Drawings Fund in memory of Eliseo Cabrejos, the net income of which shall be used for the upkeep and augmentation of the collections of drawings, including watercolours, in the Ashmolean Museum.

2. The fund shall be administered by a board of management consisting of

(1) a person, who shall be chairman, appointed by the Vice-Chancellor;

(2) the Director of the Ashmolean Museum;

(3) the Keeper of Western Art of the Ashmolean Museum;

(4), (5) two persons appointed by the Visitors of the Ashmolean Museum.

The board shall have power to delegate expenditure to the Keeper of Western Art, such delegation to be reviewed on an annual basis when the Keeper shall report to the board all exercises of his or her delegated authority. 3. The board shall apply the income of the fund towards the following purposes:

(a) the acquisition of drawings suitable for collections in the Department of Western Art;

(b) the conservation of drawings in the said collections;

(c) such other related purposes as the board shall think fit but excluding the payment of salaries of employees of the University.

Income not expended in any year shall be carried forward for expenditure in subsequent years.

4. Council shall have the power to alter this decree from time to time, provided that the main object of the fund, as stated in clause 1 above, is always kept in view.

Eldon Fund

The residue of the sum of £1,200 given in 1868 by the Right Honourable the Earl of Eldon to the Curators of the University Galleries for the purpose of (a) maintaining and illustrating the collection of Michelangelo and Raphael drawings, towards the purchase of which in 1845 his father had contributed £4,000, and (b) illustrating Italian Art generally shall be held on trust for the Visitors of the Ashmolean Museum and University Galleries to be appropriated to the purposes above mentioned.

Evans Bequest

The Curators of the University Chest shall expend, on the instructions of the Visitors of the Ashmolean Museum, either income or capital of the bequest, accepted under Decree (2) of 11 November 1941, of three-twentieths of the residuary estate of the late Sir Arthur John Evans, MA, D.Litt., Hon. Fellow of Brasenose College, Honorary Keeper and Perpetual Visitor of the Ashmolean Museum, for the upkeep and augmentation of the collections in the Minoan Room at the Ashmolean Museum.

Evans-Sutherland Fund

The University accepts with gratitude the bequest of Carol Humphrey Vivian Sutherland, CBE, MA, D.Litt., FBA, former Keeper of the Heberden Coin Room and Student of Christ Church, for the benefit of the Heberden Coin Room at the Ashmolean Museum. The bequest and the net income derived therefrom, together with Sir Arthur Evans’s bequest for the same purpose and the net income derived therefrom, accepted under Decree (2) of 11 November 1941, shall be applied by the Curators of the University Chest on the instructions of the Visitors of the Ashmolean Museum for the augmentation of the collections in the said Coin Room.

Griffith Institute

Approved by Queen-in-Council, 13 November 2003 (Gazette, 20 February 2003)

1. The bequests of Professor and Mrs Griffith accepted by the University by Decree (2) of 25 January 1938 shall be applied for the purpose in the first place of furnishing and endowing a home or institute for Egyptological Study, and in the second place, after that purpose has been sufficiently accomplished, for the purpose of the expansion of the home or institute to Babylonian or other departments of archaeological research.

2. The institute shall be named the Griffith Institute in memory of the principal benefactors.

3. The institute and the net income of the Griffith Bequests shall be administered by the Board of the Faculty of Oriental Studies.

4. Regulations 2 and 3 above may be amended by Council.

1. The benefaction arising from the A.H. Gardiner Settlement for Egyptological Purposes of 10 March 1939 shall form a fund, the net income of which shall be expended for the general purposes of Egyptology.

2. The fund shall be administered by the Board of the Faculty of Oriental Studies.

3. Regulation 2 above may be amended by Council.

Hattatt Bequest

The University accepts with gratitude the bequest of £80,000 of the late Richard Hattatt for the Department of Antiquities of the Ashmolean Museum. The net income of the bequest shall be expended for the general purposes of the department.

Jones Bequest

A bequest of £1,000 under the will of the late John Reginald Jones, BA, Trinity College, for the Department of Western Art in the Ashmolean Museum, shall be used to establish a fund for the purchase of pictures or other works of art not less than one hundred years old, to be known as ‘The Reginald Jones Bequest’.

Kemp Bequest

The following decree has been made by Council under the provisions of Decree (1) of 5 March 1940:

1. The Kemp Collection of painting, scrolls, jades, brasses, books, embroideries, pictures, and other objects illustrating the civilizations of China and neighbouring countries, shall be housed in the Ashmolean Museum in space allotted by the Visitors.

2. The Visitors shall have power to make temporary loans from the collection to other institutions within the University at their discretion.

3. The Visitors shall make a catalogue of the collection which shall contain information of any dispersals by temporary loan.

4. If at any time a building is erected devoted to the study of Eastern civilizations inclusive of the Chinese, the Kemp Collection shall be transferred to it, and the whole of the cash bequest for its housing, exhibition, and maintenance shall be devoted to the purposes of that building.

5. If any of the articles referred to in clause 1 above shall become unsuitable for purposes of study in the University, the Visitors may present them to other universities or schools or, with the consent of Council, deal with them in such other way as may most effectively promote interest in Eastern civilizations.

Milne Bequest

The bequest by the late J.G. Milne, MA, D.Litt., Corpus Christi College, of his residuary estate shall be held in trust for the maintenance and benefit of the Collection of Coins in the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology and the Numismatic Library in connection with the said collection.

North Bequest

The University accepts with gratitude the bequest of the late Eric Harrison North for the Department of Eastern Art of the Ashmolean Museum of a collection of Chinese ceramics, seals, books, pictures, and objects of art together with one-half of his residuary estate. The money shall be expended at the discretion of the Visitors of the Ashmolean Museum for the purposes of the Department of Eastern Art, both capital and income being expendable.

Oriental Art (Lecturers in)

Sums given for the provision of lecturers in Oriental Art shall be administered by the Keeper of the Department of Eastern Art, Ashmolean Museum.

Russell Bequest

The income from the residue of the estate of the late A.G.B. Russell shall be expended at the discretion of the Visitors of the Ashmolean Museum as to half for the purchase of ‘Old Master’ drawings and as to half for the purchase of works of art of major importance for the Ashmolean Museum.

Story Bequest

The University accepts with gratitude the residuary bequest of the late Jeffery Stokes Story for the Ashmolean Museum. The net income from the bequest shall be expended at the discretion of the Visitors of the Ashmolean Museum to purchase Japanese art objects for the museum and to provide grants to the staff and students of the museum for the study of Japanese art.
