After graduating from Guy’s Hospital Medical School, Andrew began postgraduate training first in Internal Medicine in London and Brisbane, and then in Anaesthetics & Intensive Care Medicine in London, and Cambridge and Oxford. He was awarded a doctoral training fellowship and undertook this in the Nuffield Department of Anaesthetics, now Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences (NDCN).
On completion he was appointed to a Senior Fellowship in Nuffield Division of Anaesthetics (NDA), a tutorial Fellowship in preclinical Medicine at Wadham, and a part-time consultant post in Oxford University Hospitals (OUH). Since then he has divided his time between clinical practice, research and teaching. His research group works in the area of biomedical engineering, developing mathematical physiological models, novel intravascular sensors and analytical techniques to detect and monitor disordered physiology of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems in the critically ill. It is funded by the Wellcome Trust, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and the National Institute of Health Research. Its aim is to translate these new technologies and analytical models into medical devices that can have an impact on patient care.
