A legislative proposal and explanatory note on changes to Statute XIV (together with associated regulations) were published in Gazette No 5164, 23 March 2017. This put forward changes in support of the recommendations of the EJRA working group (as described in the Gazette).
A Congregation meeting took place on 2 May in the Sheldonian Theatre. At the meeting both amendments were rejected and the legislative proposal was carried. The results were as follows:
Amendment 1: to raise the age of retirement to 30th September immediately preceding the employee’s 71st birthday: rejected (56 votes in favour; 97 votes against).
Amendment 2: to raise the age of retirement to 30th September immediately preceding the employee’s 70th birthday and to further raise this to 30th September immediately preceding the employee’s 71st birthday from the fifth year onwards: rejected (57 votes in favour; 95 votes against).
The legislative proposal: approved (104 votes in favour; 19 votes against).
POSTAL VOTE AMENDMENT 1
A postal vote was called on Amendment 1 to the legislative proposal (as announced in Gazette 11 May).
The result was as follows:
599 votes in favour; 945 votes against.
The amendment was accordingly rejected. The result confirms the outcome of the vote at the Congregation meeting on 2 May.
